FAQ's - Safeguarding
If you have a question that isn't covered here please fill out the Contact Us page or Click Here to send an email directly, we will then endeavour to add your question to our FAQ's section.
1. What is a DBS check?
DBS stands for "Disclosure and Baring Service". England Netball uses a type of check called an "Enhanced Disclosure". An Enhanced Disclosure is a printed record containing information from the Police National Computer, local Police intelligence and a check of Government lists of those people banned from working with children and young people.

2. What do you mean by children and young people?

All those who are under the age of 18.

3. Why do people working in Netball need to have a check?
The check allows England Netball to identify those people who are banned from working with children and young people, and to subsequently ensure that they are not involved in junior netball.

The check also allows England Netball to identify those with a history who may pose a potential risk to children, and to make responsible decisions about whether those people should be involved in junior netball.

4. Does everyone working in Netball need to be checked?
No. An enhanced disclosure is not required for all roles in netball, and the role title a person holds does not necessarily indicate whether or not they are eligible for a check. To require a check, in general the type of work will involve regularly caring for, supervising, training or being in sole charge of children.

Examples include:
Coaches
Junior League Umpires
Assistant Coaches
Team Managers
First Aider/ Physiotherapist
Club or League Safeguarding (Welfare) Officer

5. What should be in a first aid kit?
What should a first-aid box in the workplace contain? There is no mandatory list of contents for first-aid boxes and HSE does not 'approve' or endorse particular products. Deciding what to include should be based on an employer's assessment of first-aid needs. As a guide, where work activities involve low hazards, a minimum stock of first-aid items might be: a leaflet giving general guidance on first aid, eg HSE's leaflet: Basic advice on first aid at work[3]; 20 individually wrapped sterile plasters (assorted sizes), appropriate to the type of work (you can provide hypoallergenic plasters, if necessary); two sterile eye pads; four individually wrapped triangular bandages, preferably sterile; six safety pins; two large, individually wrapped, sterile, unmedicated wound dressings; six medium-sized, individually wrapped, sterile, unmedicated wound dressings; a pair of disposable gloves, see HSE's free leaflet: Latex and you PDF[4]. This is only a suggested contents list. It is recommended that you don't keep tablets and medicines in the first-aid box. More advice is given in HSE's free leaflet: First aid at work: your questions answered[5]. How often should the contents of first-aid boxes be replaced? Although there is no specified review timetable, many items, particularly sterile ones, are marked with expiry dates. They should be replaced by the dates given and expired items disposed of safely. In cases where sterile items have no dates, it would be advisable to check with the manufacturers to find out how long they can be kept. For non-sterile items without dates, it is a matter of judgement, based on whether they are fit for purpose. Waterproof bag to keep it in.

6. What if I do more than one role?
You will only need one check regardless of the number of roles you do in netball. Choose the role that you spend most time on.

7. I already have a check from another organisation; do I really need another one?
Yes. Unfortunately the check is not portable from one job or organisation to another and therefore if you are working in netball you will need to have an England Netball check. The information received by the employer when a CRB check is requested is not generally shared between organisations therefore you must have your check done through England Netball to work within netball. This system also ensures that decisions taken to employ someone in netball (volunteer or paid) are all assessed the same through the same system and to the same criteria (ie risk assessed for netball by those working within netball).

8. I am a teacher; do I still need an England Netball check to work outside of the school environment?

Yes. The check is not portable from one job or organisation to another and therefore if you are working in Netball you will need to have an England Netball check. Please see further explanation above.

9. I already have a check from another sport; do I really need another one?
